A little bit about Largs

Largs is a historic battle town on the North Ayrshire coast. Just as with many seaside towns, Largs flourished as a seaside resort in the 19th and early 20th century, with thousands of holiday-makers flocking to enjoy the pebble beaches and refreshments at cafes including the famous Nardini’s. Today, Largs serves as a port for the ferry serving the island of Greater Cumbrae (commonly known as Millport – the island’s main town) as well as the paddle steamer Waverley (the oldest surviving ocean going paddle-steam liner).

As a nod to its ancient Viking past, Largs hosts an annual Viking festival, marking the last invasion of the UK mainland in 1263 (remembered at the battle monument known as The Pencil).

Today Largs remains popular with Scottish people as a weekend destination and is a thriving community with a population of over 11,000. As well as still playing host to the world famous Nardini’s, there is a modern marina, the Inverclyde National Sports Centre as well as the popular Vikingar sports and leisure centre.
